Pigeons and Doves

2 of 34 species photographed

Thirty-four species, and the family everyone thinks they already know from the birds on a city ledge. India's wild pigeons and doves range far beyond that: heavy-bodied fruit pigeons deep in evergreen canopy, plain grey-brown doves of scrub and farmland, and high-altitude specialists like Snow Pigeon that spend their lives above the treeline in country most birders never visit.

Snow Pigeon is a good example of how much this family can vary while still reading, at a glance, as unmistakably a pigeon: pale grey hood, buffy body, boldly banded black-and-white wings, and red legs, found on bare rock and snow at altitude in the Himalaya rather than anywhere near a city. The photographic challenge for the alpine species in this group has nothing to do with the birds being shy — Snow Pigeon is often confiding — and everything to do with simply getting to where they live.

A pale grey hood and neck, buffy-brown body, and boldly banded black-and-white wings visible both folded and in flight, with bright red legs. Speckled Wood-Pigeon

Columba hodgsonii1 frame
Status
Resident, with altitudinal movement
Range
The Himalaya from Himachal Pradesh east through Arunachal Pradesh, mid to high elevation forest
Habitat
Forest canopy, often in fruiting trees, roosting communally in treetops
IUCN
Least Concern

A dark, richly coloured pigeon — maroon-chestnut body finely speckled with white spots, a grey head, and a pale-tipped tail. Found in forest rather than open country, often in small flocks that roost together at the top of a tall tree, as in this frame of several birds gathered on bare, lichen-draped branches at first light.
